Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon, artist, writer, diplomat, author and archaeologist, joined Napoleon's expedition to Egypt as part of the arts and literature section of the Institut d'Égypte. His fine engravings presented Egyptian art to a receptive audience and had a substantial impact on the decorative arts of the day. His two-volume Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte (Journey in Lower and Upper Egypt), 1802, is considered the foundation of modern Egyptology.
