Descubra la tasación y los precios de esta y más obras de arte africano en Africartmarket. Makonde Tanzania / Mozambique African Mask

Descripción : Second half 20th. C. Realistic facial features combined with real human hair on the head is typical of Lipiko masks, however this is a conventional face mask that must be strapped to the dancerÕs head, rather than a full helmet. It features a fine lip plug which almost looks like it could be removed. Though masks like this play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are about 500,000 Makonde, divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. They survive economically from farming and occasionally, cattle rearing. Makonde carvers are prolific producers of masks, statues and decorative objects. The Makonde have two main types of masks: helmet crests, known as lipiko, and face masks. Their masks, along with those of the Kongo and Vili cultures of the northwestern Congo, show realistic Negroid features, unlike the more stylized faces found elsewhere in west and central Africa. The anthropomorphic face masks portray particular individuals. Design elements frequently include scarification marks, and eyebrows, lashes and coiffure made of real hair, with cloth hood attached to head. Condition good, some hair loss holes to cloth hood.
