Descripción : Cartton Eshun, Takoradi (Ghana), mid 20th century CE. Signed CARTTON ESHUN TKDI. on the lower right and painted in a vibrant color palette on heavy gauge cloth, a large-scale composition depicting a half-length portrait of a male African archer seated in profile and drawing his bow with a double quiver holding more arrows hooked to his left forearm. The sitter is dressed in a red, black, and white striped shirt, his handsome visage is topped by a vermilion and black woven fiber hat, and the composition is set against a seafoam green background that is further adorned with wonderful flecks of gold. Size: 32.75 L x 26.5 W (83.2 cm x 67.3 cm) Muralism in Africa is a centuries-old tradition, and due to the climate in countries such as Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and South Africa, murals are repainted or restored each year following the rainy season. Perhaps, this work, painted on fabric, was used as a model for a mural that decorated a wall - or, perhaps rather than being painted directly to architecture, the composition was painted on fabric so as to be more portable.
