EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITIES with curving rounded blade, sharp cutting edge, and narrow handle with remains of the cortex on one side. PROVENANCE Major Edmund Osborne Milne (b. 1887), DSO, Ulla-Ulinga, Commissioner's Road, Ryde, Australia, acquired by him in Egypt in 1915 CATALOGUE NOTE Cf. Brooklyn Museum, Predynastic and Archaic Egypt, no. 172, said to come from El Balabish near Abydos, and given to the Museum by professor Thomas Whittemore in 1915. One side of the blade is inscribed in ink Sacrifical(sic) Knife - Ancient Egypt. Collected by Major E.O. Milne, ANZAC, 1915. Major Edmund O. Milne, son of a New South Wales Railway Commissioner, volunteered for the Australian Imperial Forces and was directed to recruit and drill the Railway Supply Detachment, 11th Army Service Corps, which left for Egypt in December 1914. In Egypt, where he finished training his unit, he was promoted to the rank of captain and acted as transport officer in connection with the despatch of troops to Gallipoli, the Turkish peninsula which controls the straits of the Dardanelles and was to become the theater of a major military disaster for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). After being slightly wounded and evacuated along with thousands of other soldiers he returned to Egypt late in 1915 to oversee the local military railway system and prepare for the European Campaign. His company was divided and sent to France in March of 1916. The Australian First World War Nominal Roll indicates that he was released from service on January 11th, 1919. In January 1917, Edmund Milne's father lent to an exhibition at the Railway and Tramway Institute of Goulburn, New South Wales, a collection of Anzac trophies sent from the war zone by his son, it included mostly Allied and Turkish weapons and ordnance, but also local souvenirs including archaeological artifacts such as an ancient Egyptian skull from the ancient city of On, or a mummy veil and necklace from ancient Egyptian tomb. Also on display as part of this assemblage was a remarkable collection of flint and stone relics, the work of pre-historic man from the Nile Valley and the Sahara Desert, showing exquisite work in the manufacture of the implements which ancient man used in connection with his everyday life (N.S.W. Railway and Tramway Magazine, February 1st, 1917, a transcription of this article as well as wartime photographs of Major Milne and his unit are available online at
