Descripción : An Etruscan black-figure neck amphora Circa 500 B.C. Depicting three mythological scenes of Hercules in combat, side (a) showing Hercules and the Lernaean Hydra, Hercules depicted as a naked warrior, wearing a plumed helmet, holding a sword, his chlamys over his left arm, advancing towards the multiple-headed snake monster, another naked armed figure advancing left from behind it, a tree between them, side (b) showing Hercules armed with a spear and shield, in combat with a rearing centaur holding a tree branch above his head, a hound at his feet, the final scene to the left of this, beneath the handle, showing Hercules and the Erymanthian boar, Hercules and another naked youth armed with swords and spears, the boar and a tree between them, the shoulder with ovolo and bands of chevrons and dots below, the neck decorated with a palmette between the triple-reeded handles, 17in (43cm) high, repaired with some restoration

Ex property of a Massachusetts private collector. Accompanied by a receipt from Sotheby's, New York.Published:Sotheby's, New York, Fine Classical, Egyptian, and Western Asiatic Antiquities, 13th December 1979, lot 291.Literature:Scenes from the twelve labours of Hercules are often depicted on vases from Antiquity. His battle with the Lernaean Hydra and his capture of the Erymanthian Boar are well known. Although his fight with a centaur is not one of the twelve labours, Hercules did have various encounters with famous centaurs, including Pholus, Chiron and Nessus, any of which might be depicted on this vase.
