Descripción : Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved steatite scarab amulet bearing remains of crimson- and turquoise-hued glaze. The convex topside exhibits insectile features such as a bulging wing carapace, a slender head, and sinuous legs tucked beneath, a suspension hole is drilled lengthwise through the body. The underside features 3 incised hieroglyphs including a winged scarab, a uraeus cobra, and a pair of crossed arrows representing the goddess Neith. Neith was the goddess of the Nile Delta town Sais - where the pharaonic seat of power was held during the 26th Dynasty - and was one of 4 protector goddesses who guarded canopic jars and coffins.
