Descripción : Property of Lynn University to benefit the Library Renovation Fund DOGON PEOPLE REPUBLIC OF MALI Ceremonial Dance Mask Carved Wood, with light brown aged patina in form of male face with triangular eyes, inverted arrow nose, small mouth, incised triangular scarification patterns overall with small male figure kneeling on top of head 19.05 by 63.5 cm (7.50 by 25 in) Accompanied by appraisal for Lynn University by LEONARD KAHAN African Art appraiser-consultant - curator dated 4/30/09 stating Mask with kneeling figure on top. This classical Dogon mask has to be seen closer and analyzed in person for wood qualities such as erosion, handling, insect depredation. water marks, bits of remaining pigment, ifany, remains of tar (creosote) pigmentation, etc, etc. for full evaluation of age. In such a piece it is critical to study it closely with magnifiers, etc. as there are many fakes made of this style and few have survived . Further, the stylistic elements of the figure would have to beb studied closely to ascertain when it was carved. Piece could be a master fake made in thelast 50 years or 100-250 years old. This style mask is commonly faked, masterfully at that. However I don't want to condemn it till it is examined closely. Ifit is authentic the value would be $30,000If a copy, it would be evaluated at $1,000 Provenance:Gift of Arthur B. Steinman / 1999
