Morritt, a contributor, with his bookplate and with occasional critical annotations pencilled in the margins of volumes 1-4 Morritt, a prominent traveller and classical scholar, made a substantial contribution to Clarke's work, which quotes Morritt's manuscript 'journal at length in volume 2, chapter 7 (he also supplied the map of Cnidus facing page 216 Morritt is generously acknowledged in the preface to the same volume. "Morritt is one of the interesting travellers of this period" (Blackmer). In company with James Dallaway, he travelled extensively in little-known parts of Greece and Asia Minor in 2 1794-96 he published A Vindication ofhomer and the ancient Poets and Historians who have recorded the Siege and Fall of Troy 1798 and some account of his expedition to Troy is given in Dallaway's Constantinople. But despite Clarke's earnest hope that Morritt would publish his journal in full, the only other pubished extract was incorporated by Robert Walpole into Memoirs relating to European and Asiatic Turkey 1817 Employed as travelling companion to his pupil John Marten Cripps, Clarke set out on his extensive journey in 1799 Over the ensuing three years, Clarke and Cripps travelled through Russia, Tartary, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, the Holy Land and Scandinavia. Tirelessly, they collected, observed and recorded antiquities, minerals, statistics, plants, animals, climates, people and customs.
