An interesting Egyptian limestone cippus, Ptolemaic Period, c. 330 - 30 BC, depicting the youthful Horus standing frontally, wearing side lock, hands out to his sides grasping serpents, the head of the god Bes above, and papyrus stalks to either side, supporting a falcon to his right and double plumes to his left. The back of the cippus possesses seven vertical registers of hieroglyphic text, a row of five seated deities above, each with their own register of text, a large solar disk with protruding arms at top, flanked at each side by a trio of standing baboons and surmounted by a winged solar disk. The sides and top of the cippus bears two long lines of continuous text. 7 in x 4 3/4 in (17.8 x 12 cm). A beautiful piece with much eye appeal. Light earthen and mineral deposits throughout. Ex Southern California private collection. The California Museum of Ancient Art was founded in 1983 to gather the first collection focusing exclusively on the Ancient Near East in Southern California. Representing the geographic regions of Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Levant from approximately 3500 BC to 500 AD, the museum's goal is to tell the stories of the peoples of the Ancient Near East and their cultures and to promote a better appreciation for the roots of Western Civilization. The museum aims to do this in a way that is both historically accurate and user friendly and, most importantly, meaningful to the general public. From the influential peoples of Sumer, Elam, Babylon, Assyria, Hittite Anatolia, Canaan, Philistia, Israel, Judah, and Egypt of the Pharaohs to the beginnings of Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity, the aim is to bring these ancient peoples to life—actively engaging visitors by allowing the museum's ancient artworks and written texts to tell their amazing stories.
