Descripción : The most powerful and important of the masks made and used by the Chokwe people is known as chikunga. Highly charged with power and considered sacred, chikunga masks are used during investiture ceremonies of a chief as well as sacrifices to the ancestors, and are worn only by the current chief of a group. The mukanda is an initiatory institution through which religion, art, and social organization are transmitted from one generation to the next, and the masks of the same name play an important role in this male initiation. Boys between the ages of eight and twelve years spend one to two years in a secluded wilderness camp away from the village, where they are circumcised and spend several months learning their anticipated roles as men. As a part of their instruction, the boys are taught the history and traditions of the group and the secrets associated with the wearing and making of masks. Both chikunga and mukanda masks are made of barkcloth stretched over an armature of wickerwork, and covered over with black resin. Chikunga masks are painted with red and white designs, while mukanda masks are ornamented with pieces of colored cloth. This mask was carved from wood, with thin sheets of metal tied to the cheeks and mouth. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum. A fantastic piece that's perfect for your collection! Piece is in overall good condition for its age, with minor wear from use. There are some breaks to the wood under the metal plating that look to have old village repairs. There is some cracking to the top which appears to have been repaired more recently. Wood has a rich, dark patina throughout. Overall in good condition for its age. Measures approximately 16 x 7.25 x 12 with a total weight of 1.5 lbs.
