Descripción : AFRICAN TRIBAL ART, CARVED WOOD CHOKWE MASK - An example of Pwo, a classic Chokwe mask genre that honors founding female ancestors tracing descent through the mother's lineage. Solid wood carved with distinct nose, pouty lips and slit eyes, scarification on forehead and beneath eye sockets. Fiber and cloth form an attachment for bamboo rods which simulate hair. Masks are often worn at ceremonies which mark the completion of initiation into adulthood. Good condition. Early 20th century. 13.75H x 10W
