Descripción : -Baule Heddle Pulley- -Ivory Coast, Africa- -Mid 20th Century- The Baule of Cote d'Ivoire are one of the largest ethnic groups in the Ivory Coast, and have played, a central role in the history of the country throughout the twentieth century. This tribe waged the longest war of resistance against European colonialism fighting the French, and have thus been able to maintain their traditional objects, and beliefs longer than many groups. This beautiful heddle pulley shows the exquisite artistry and craftsmanship typical of Baule works. Pulleys such as this were used throughout Africa for weaving and other tasks. The face has a, wonderful gentle smile and warm almond-shaped eyes. Provenance: These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America, and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum.
