Learn more at aqfoundation.org ** West Africa, Mali, Bamana (also Bambara) peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden clapper bearing intricately incised linear motifs as well as a miniature face mask protruding from the top. The spade-shaped instrument has 3 rows of crosshatched columns across the midsection as well as horizontal registers of zigzagging and lattice pattern motifs, and behind the maskette is an inverted V-shaped panel with a pair of downward-facing flanges incised with additional linear decorations. Clappers like this example were used in pairs along with a guita calabash to provide rhythm for ceremonial dances and traditional puppet performances. Condition report : Second clapper missing. Minor abrasions to clapper panel and mask, with wear to some raised areas, and fading to brown pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
