With four columns of painted hieroglyphs reading: "A recitation: Nephthys, put your arms around what is in you, protect Hapy who is inside you. The revered one next to Hapy, the Scribal accountant of the Fields of Amun, Pa-Iynen", the human-headed lid with eyes, ears, collar and striations of the wig painted in black 13 3/8 in. (34 cm.) high

Procedencia : Belgian private collection, acquired from the Fondation Veranneman, Kruishoutem, Belgium, 1968; a letter from 1966 with a translation accompanies this lot.

The god Hapy, later represented with a baboon head, is the protector of lungs and is himself protected by Nephthys, the goddess of the East. For similar, cf. exhibition catalogue, Mummies and Magic, The Funerary Arts of Ancient Egypt, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1988, p. 149, no. 91. The title of the owner indicates a probable Theban provenance.
