Procedencia : This wooden mask was originally purchased in South Africa and comes from the private art collection of US Congressmen and Presidential Special Envoy Howard Wolpe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Wolpe) who served as a US Representative for seven terms and was well known for his anti-apartheid and conflict resolution efforts in South Africa, including a political partnership and friendship with Nelson Mandela, during which time these pieces were acquired. Kanaga masks were made to be worn for ritualistic dances by the Dogon people of Mail. It's simplest terms, the mask represents both Earth and Sky as well as the birth of the world.
