Descripción : Details: This lot consists of the antique engravings shown in the corresponding images. These plates (numbers 73, 74, and 75) have been excised from the second volume of Description de l'Egypte : ou, Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l'expedition de l'armee francaise (first published in 1809), which details Napoleon's expedition to Egypt. Plate 73, manuscrit sur papyrus en caractere hieroglyphiques, deuxime parte, depicts agricultural scenes--driving cattle, harvesting grain--and then individuals making offerings to the deities. This central image is surrounded by a zigzag pattern, representing water. The description of Plate 74, manuscrit sur papyrus en caractere hieroglyphiques, troisieme parte, points out that the spaces in the characters are intentional and indicate a change in subject matter. In the lower right corner of Plate 75, manuscrit sur papyrus en caractere hieroglyphiques, quatrieme parte, is a small table with the solar disc giving off nine rays. A variety of animals are also present, including cats, monkeys, and scarab beetles. This collection of plates is from the holdings of Archaeologia Books and Prints.
