Descripción : Eastern Africa, Kenya or Tanzania, Maasai peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful spear of a lengthy form with a bottom spike and a massive blade both attached to the ends of a short, central wooden pole. The bottom spike is of a dense form and features several incised notches just above the conical socketing shaft. The blade is also affixed to the pole via a socketing shaft and has a massive, double-edged blade with petite flanges near the shoulder and a midrib that runs along the entire length. Spears like this example were a Maasai warrior's most prized possession and were used to defend herds and the community against predators. Condition report : Slight bending to overall form, with light abrasions and oxidation to blade head and bottom spike, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout. Please note: edges along blade head are still extremely sharp.
