Learn more at aqfoundation.org ** West Africa, Central Mali, Dogon or Bamana peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine freestanding wrought iron sculpture of a warrior or hunter upon a horse, rendered in a stylized manner using multiple pieces of iron. The figure and horse are hammered and shaped from several flat panels and wires then assembled and balanced upright, with the slender rider facing forward, a separate twisted spear in his hand. Horses and horse ownership symbolized status, wealth, and power for the Dogon people, and equestrian warriors were highly revered among the Dogon and artwork incorporating horses and riders were meant to depict powerful men, or mythological figures, such as the primordial spirits known as Nommo.
