Notas : The 1930s marked a highly prolific and creative chapter in Burliuk's oeuvre. He was fascinated with man's place in a transitory world and the implications of man's evolution on art. Accordingly, many of his works from this period incorporate classical structures and symbols along with modern themes that reference the fleeting nature of time (fig 1). "...Since mankind always moves forward and never back, it is logical for those in the world of art as in aviation. We must seek new ways to express the idea of form"(Burliuk as quoted in Katherine Dreier, Burliuk, p. 138). On the Raft is a monumental, two-part composition depicting the grand development of mankind's artistic creativity. At right, Burliuk traces in imagery the evolution of human civilization, moving from the hieroglyphic symbols of ancient Egypt to Classical Greek architecture and, shown in relief on the frieze above, the figures of Romulus and Remus, founders of the city of Rome. The figures at center perch on a raft, symbolizing the "...uncertain outcome of human existence" (Marussia Burliuk, Color and Rhyme, no. 57). The man at left (modeled by Nicholas Burliuk, the artist's son), wearing a toga, hands the figure at center a scroll and torch, symbols of justice and law, as a guitar (music) and a bowl of fruit (art) lie at their feet, representing the manner in which each of these key markers of civilization has been passed down to us from the beginning of time. The woman at far right crouches in fetal position over an urn which bears an image of a bald eagle, a symbol of the United States. Here, Burliuk underscores the naïveté and hopeful possibility of this budding nation against the enduring cultural achievements of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. On the Raft is a definitive masterpiece, beautifully conveying mankind's eternal journey into the vast and exciting unknown.
