Descripción : African, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Maniema region, Tabwa people, ca. early to mid 20th century. Mbira, also known as sanza, are works of art in Africa. These thumb pianos are finely crafted musical instruments used in many ceremonial functions, including dance, storytelling, and other rituals. These two examples are made of fine grained wood with several metal keys to be plucked with one's thumbs, hence the term thumb piano. Both present nice patina from years of handling and use. Playable and create lovely tones, containing bits of rock that rattle to produce a percussive rhythm with the player's movement.
