Título : Pende Mask
Medios : Pende masks are among the most dramatic works of all African art. The masks embody ancestral forces and serve as intermediaries between the spirit world. Masks of the eastern Pende, like our example here, are typically painted red, black, and white, and are decorated with rows of small, incised painted triangles. They are flat and are characterized by an exaggerated width and large projecting ears. The design of this mask combines surreal and cubist elements. This is a particularly nice example because of the symmetry and grace of the carving.
