Descripción : Kor, Southeast Nigeria (Taraba State) and West Cameroon (Western Adamawa Region): Mambila people shield, ca. late 19th c. Partially-dyed oval wickerwork with geometric patterns of crossing diagonal lines, deep concave/convex top and bottom, and central vertical slats, wickerwork handle over wooden plate. Top and bottom are semicircular to allow a better view and flexibility for the feet. With original sling for the arm and cord to grip. This convex oval shield is from one of the largest types of African shields. According to old records, the Mambila people stuck porcupine quills on the reverse that they then used to deter pursuers. A smaller shield with identical pattern is in the collection of the Minnapolis Institute of Art (acc. no. 99.13.6). Height: 45 in x width: 38 in. SKU: 02604 Follow us on Instagram: @revereauctions
