Talla : height 16 3/4 in. 39.5cmProcedencia : PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF DEBORAH STOKES HAMMER, CHICAGOErnst Anspach, New YorkLiterature : The Museum of Primitive Art, African Tribal Sculpture from the Collection of Ernst and Ruth Anspach, 1967: 30, catalogue of the exhibition at The Museum of Primitive Art, New York, November 1967-February 1968Walker, African Women/African Art, 1976: 37, figure 23, catalogue of the exhibition at The African-American Institute, New York, September 13-December 31, 1976Notas : This headdress, exceptional in its refinement, delicacy of execution and slender features, was probably collected at the turn-of-the-century when other closely related examples were accessioned into the collections of the British Museum and the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago. Anspach's notes on this work state: 'Skin covered wooden head mask, probably for the leopard society. c. 1911. Ekoi (ejagham), Nigeria' (1974: number 52). See Trowell (1953: plate XI, A.) for the closely related headdress in the collection of the British Museum. The records of the Field Museum, regarding another closely related example, state that their headdress was acquired, through another party, by Johann Gustav Umlauff, a German collector at the turn-of-the-century (van Rijn), and then accessioned into the museum's collection on August 7, 1925 (reference number 1608).Sotheby's, subastador, New York, US
