Notas : Rumours is part of a small series of six linocuts, including Splash, Portrait, Floral Dress, Solo for Bicycle, and Hadeda, all produced in 2010 at the David Krut Workshop. While linocuts were not prevalent in Kentridge's earlier works, one of his first prints, dating back to 1976, was a linocut depicting his grandfather relaxing in a three-piece suit during a holiday in Muizenberg, near Cape Town. Despite limited resources at the time, Kentridge used linoleum, cartridge paper, and a spoon's back to create the print.
The linocut Rumours draws from text that Kentridge discovered while researching his production of The Nose, which follows the tale of a pompous Russian official named Kovalyov, awakening one day to find his nose has mysteriously detached and roams around St. Petersburg.
Additionally, the dress tiers in the image originate from one of the costumes in the opera. Kentridge previously adapted the same image into a coloured silkscreen called Rumours and Impossibilities in 2005, which he created in collaboration with Malcolm Christian at the Caversham Press in 2010. [1]
