THE COMPLETE BOOK OF THE DEAD FOR HOR-WEDJA SAITE PERIOD, 26TH DYNASTY, REIGN OF PSAMTEK II, CIRCA 594-588 B.C. A previously unknown example of the Saite Recension of the Book of the Dead, virtually complete with 192 chapters, the text written in hieratic script using black ink, with spell titles and important sections in red ink to emphasise their significance, each spell illustrated by one or more vignettes, at least 227 vignettes in total, drawn and painted in black and red, with magnificent scenes of the Judgment hall of Osiris (Spell 125) and of the afterlife in the Fields of Reef (Spell 110), and the papyrus starting with a black ink drawing of the god Osiris seated on his throne, of which we see the lower part of his feet and throne, the base decorated with wesekh- and ankh-scepters on neb-baskets Length : 17.40 m. , Width : 0.3 m. THE DATE OF THE PAPYRUS The Praenomen of King Psamtek II is found in the name of the owner of the present papyrus : Neferibra (Nfr-ỉb-Rʿ), indicating a dating to this Pharaoh’s reign. The final chapters of the papyrus (163,164, 165, 162) belong to a set of “additional” chapters that follow a special order pertaining specifically to the Saite Period (A. Wüthrich, Eléments de théologie thébaine: les chapitres supplémentaires du Livre des Morts, Wiesbaden, 2010), further supporting this dating. THE COMMISSIONER OF THE TEXT The name of the deceased for whom the book is dedicated is referred to several times in the text and is Hor-wedja ( Ḥr-wḏȝ), alias Ankhnef-Neferibra (ʿnḫ n.f-Nfr-ỉb-Rʿ), son of Pa-sheri-Iah (Pȝ-šrỉ-Ỉʿḥ) and of Ta-sherit-Hor-pa … (?) (Tȝ-šrỉt-Ḥr-pȝ-… (?). However, he is not the first owner of this manuscript. The papyrus was first drafted for another person, probably a close contemporary of Neb-heb-Hor-wedja, and whose name has been systematically erased and replaced by the new name, when space allowed it, the latter mentioned his name and filiation as much as possible. It is possible to discern a different hand, in thicker script, where these substitutions or additions have been inserted. ORIGINS The Book of the Dead is a collection of up to 200 magical spells, accompanied by illustrations commonly called vignettes, which the ancient Egyptians placed in their tombs in order to help the deceased pass through the dangers of the Underworld and reach an afterlife of bliss in the Fields of Reeds. Workshops of specialised scribes would prepare the texts and sell them to a prospective owner who would thereafter add his name in the spaces left for the name and titles of the commissioner. An expert draughtsman would add the vignettes. Spells and incantations were already in use in the Old Kingdom and originated probably in the Predynastic Period. The first occurrence of a complete organised text was in the pyramid of King Wenis, last ruler of the 5th dynasty in about 2345 B.C. and was subsequently called the Pyramid Texts. Exclusively reserved for royalty and great noblemen in this early period, funerary beliefs and practices were democratised in the Middle Kingdom. Now called Coffin Texts, utterances of the Pyramid Texts were painted on wood coffins. From the New Kingdom to the Ptolemaic Period, papyrus became the material of choice and the text was written in a cursive script called hieratic and derived from hieroglyphs. Small at first, the Book of the Dead grew steadily through the New Kingdom to the Third Intermediate Period and the Late Period. In the 7th-6th century B.C., the 26th dynasty, based in Sais in the Delta, regularised the text, fixing the number of chapters to 192, with formulae consistently ordered and numbered for the first time, in the manner of a modern textual edition. This standardised version became known as the “Saite Recension”. More or less the same sequence and selection is found in all Books of the Dead from this time until the Ptolemaic period, although the text did become increasingly abbreviated. Whilst the name “Saite recension” is applied to the Books of the Dead dating from the 26th Dynasty onwards, it is important to note that in fact very few manuscripts can be dated to the Saite Dynasty itself, there are perhaps fewer than twenty surviving 26th Dynasty Books of the Dead, in contrast to some four to five hundred manuscripts dated to the Ptolemaic Period. The present papyrus is part of this so-called Saite Recension. CONDITION Originally, the papyrus roll was wrapped in a fabric which covered the circular extremities as well. In several places, insect activity created holes in the rolled papyrus. This has necessitated ancient repair, and one can notice the presence of rectangular patchwork pieces added on the back of the scroll, clearing the front where the scribe could add the now-missing text. All the affected areas were corrected in Antiquity, save one vignette, where a male deity holds a disc above his head. This has not been completed, the reason being that the text and the illustrations were not done by the same person. Provenance : France, private property of Mr. B.-A, owned in 1952. Ex-collection of Khawam Brothers, Cairo, 1950. This Book of the Dead comes with an export license from Egypt stamped in 1952.
