Sobre el lote Lote N° 103
Título : A LARGE MOULDED BLUE GLASS FLASK, PERSIA OR EGYPT, 10TH-11TH CENTURY AD
Notas : Following Roman traditions dating back to the first century BC, early Islamic glassware was manufactured by blowing molten glass into a patterned mould. This technique was a major step forward from the ancient labour-intensive method of casting and forming, which began in the third millenium BC. A faster production time allowed craftspeople to innovate and experiment, a practice that led to the introduction of novel forms and designs (Stefano Carboni and David Whitehouse, Glass of the Sultans, New York 2001, pp.71-81). This magnificent pattern-moulded bell-shaped flask is an astonishing example of early glasswork from the Islamic world. Its decoration has been suggested to represent the shapes present on the exterior of tortoise-shells and can be found in a number of similar objects dating to the 10th and 11th centuries (Shinju Fukai, Persian Glass, New York 1977, no. 74). An almost identical flask of similar quality and with the same decorative pattern is now in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection (see Sidney M. Goldstein, Glass, Washington D.C. 2007, no.152, p.124). Further comparable examples are now at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York and the Al-Sabah Collection in Kuwait.
