H 76 cm R D Congo We thank Father François NEYT, art historian, exhibition curator, author of numerous books on Tribal Art and in particular on Songye statues, for his two-page report signed and dated 27 September 2013: This Kongo sculpture belongs to the Nkonde type. These are fearsome effigies intended to ward off evil spirits, to discern the truth. A statue with a more ovoid face is in the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. With the same attitude: standing posture, right arm raised, the fingers of the hand forming a circle intended to hold a weapon, left arm resting on the hip. This work comes from Mayombe and would have been used at the beginning of the 20th century.
