Oil on canvas
Germany, around 1900
Carl Buchner (1821-1918) – German portrait painter, graphic artist, presumably one of the first to color photographs
Signed at the lower right ‘C. Buchner’
Dimensions of canvas: 68.9 x 57.2 cm

German painter Carl Buchner is famous for his portraits in oil that are accurate in every detail and offered charming work proves this. The skillfully executed bust portrait of this elegant lady is rendered in gentle pastel tones that have been applied to the canvas with fine, homogenous brush strokes. Every single hair strand of the classily hairstyle is visible and the transparent fabric of the dress is placed formidably around the woman’s shoulders.

The painting is signed at the lower right ‘C. Buchner’. Optically in a good condition, it shows along the edges slight damages due to framing. In places, the surface shows craquelure as well as stronger color flaking. The canvas is slightly bumped and under UV-light tiny touch-ups appear. The dimensions of the oval painting measure 68.9 x 57.2 cm. (nlu)
