Clive van den Berg, South African 1956-, Man Loses History V ,2012
Notes : In the series Man Loses History the artist deals with themes of preserving witness stories of events which should not be forgotten, of the duty of museums and memorials to help tell the stories which were once suppressed, and of how easy it is for memory to fade, mixing with dreams in sleep, or for the uncomfortable elements of true history to be forgotten. Van den Berg uses art and architecture to help retain the reference to facts. Especially when they have been covered in shame or political secrets for many years, or swept away with the dead, or hidden 'under the rug', or just lost as people age. These works are a plea for real archives and documents to be preserved.
