Consulter la cote et le prix de Yoruba 'Opo Ogboni' House Post, 1976

Description : Wood Nigeria, West Africa, 1st half 20th century Yoruba people House post for a cult shrine Mounted on a pedestal Height: 161 cm Very good condition Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. This house post is decorated with three anthropomorphic heads, their faces show the clan-typical tattoos. These posts serve as an architectural part of cult shrines and palaces of princes and kings where they mostly carry the courtyard side canopies. House posts are the most important and most outstanding sculptures of the art of the Yoruba. Apart from their function as figural support elements for roofs and corridors its symbolic task was to represent royal power and strength. The representation of the king, his family and his entourage showed his origin of important ancestors, as mother figures are mostly depictions of the queen mother: the continuation of the dynasty was embodied in the origin of the future king. The post is in very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. There are slight weather damages at the foot and some flaking to identify. On the post remains of an old polychrome paint can be seen. The height is 161 cm. (asi)Literature: S. M. Vogel, African Aesthetics, The Carlo Monzino collection, p. 40 et seq. K. F.
