Description : * West Indies. A remarkable and extensive letter of an English Clergyman, appropriately called Edward Christian, in which he describes in astonishing detail his feelings towards the local black population in Barbados, where he has become a Priest, 4 closely written pages, 4to, Cedros, February 15th 1848, one hole affecting a few words, some marks but in generally very fine, fresh and legible condition, ... you cannot conceive the trials we have to put up with from being unable to get servants worth anything especially where I live it is difficult to get one at all ... the negroes are noisy, idle and insolent and add to that pride and self assurance so that nothing can be done unless it suits thesmelves and as they are pleased to do it ... a man died here the other day from starvation, being too lazy even to watch a gate to keep the cattle from passing through, for which he might have got as much as would find him food but he actually refused and said he did not come into the country to work - he was an African emigrant. The kinder you are to them the less they respect you ... as there is no check put on the children they walk in the steps of their fathers and sink in the scale of civilization as yours increase upon them .... An astonishing insight into at least one Christian Shepherd's attitude towards his flock. No wonder the colonies failed to develop. (1)
