Description : fiber form a circular fiber support, the cylindrical neck beneath a janiform head, each face with open mouth bearing inset bamboo teeth, the front two files to a point, beneath a naturalistic nose and metal inset eyes, and supporting a four-pronged headpiece at the crown, the whole encased in animal skin with deep brown burgundy on one side and lighter brown on the other, fine scarification markings. height 13 in. (33 cm.) Cf. Nicklin, 'Skin-Covered Masks of Cameroon,' in African Arts, 1979:54. 'Cross River janus-faced helmet mask is traditionally worn with the dark (male) side facing forward, and the light-colored (female) side to the rear.' The skin-covered heads are typical of the Cross River region, which is in southeast Nigeria and crosses into Cameroon.
