Consulter la cote et le prix de Early 20Th C. African Ngbaka Wooden Female Figure, 2007

Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ngbaka peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A gorgeous hand-carved wooden female figure standing atop attenuated legs. The woman exhibits a short, knee-length skirt beneath a nude upper body, perky breasts, slender arms hanging to her sides, sloping shoulders, and a broad neck. The near-spherical head features a recessed face with inset shell eyes, a flat nose with carved ridges adorning the nasal bridge, thin lips, and wide cheeks, all beneath an incised backswept coiffure. Layers of dark-brown pigment are presented across the composition and imbue the figure with a fabulous presentation evocative of fine Central African artistry! Size: 4 W x 12.4 H (10.2 cm x 31.5 cm), 14.1 H (35.8 cm) on included custom stand. Ngbaka figurative effigies like this example are rare objects that are believed to represent Seto and Nabo, the sister and brother messengers of the supreme deity Gala (Gbonboso), recognized as the ancestors of the Ngbaka. Carved images of Seto and Nabo are placed atop a family altar where they can be paid respect daily, and where they can protect the family from illness and hardship. A stylistically-similar example, of an admittedly larger size, hammered for EUR 13,450 ($14,930.44) at Christie's, Paris Art Africain et Oceanien auction (sale 5497, December 11, 2007, lot 267): Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, ex-Jean Zimmerman collection, New York, USA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
