Description : Africa, Cameroon, Bamileke, ca. 1960. Absolutely jaw-dropping! A gorgeous Ndop royal indigo resist textile - very rare to find in orange and indigo - and quite large! Ndop indigo raffia stitched and dyed textiles like this example were created to be mesmerizing backdrops setting the tone for king's thrones as well as other royalty during special ceremonies, for impressive displays on a king's palace walls, as floor coverings for royalty, or to be worn during traditional dances. The indigo blue color of this cloth refers to royalty, and the various stylized geometric motifs and figurative forms also possess royal symbolism. This cloth is quite sizeable and comprised of many narrow strips of handwoven cotton that have been skillfully sewn together. To create the patterns, a resist pattern was stitched with raffia and then the textile was dyed. A very special find for any African textile collector - a quality African indigo work!
