Description : -Bena Lulua (Luluwa)- The Bena Lulua, whose name is derived from the Lulua River on which they live, create male, female, and mother-and-child figure sculptures which measure over 8 inches tall with similar, characteristics. They often show an enlarged navel or umbilical hernia. Most of the surface is covered with elaborate scarification markings, with circular, V-shaped, and other linear designs. They typically feature a pointed headdress, and, sometimes wear a small loincloth. Often figures are shown holding a staff as well as a calabash bowl to hold magical elements for protecting newborn babies. Male 'Lupfingu' figures represented chiefs, and were used to heal the sick, and bring good fortune. Some figures feature large heads and feet, and these most likely represented ancestors. Bena Lulua masks are quite rare, and feature intricate scarification corresponding to the, patterns on the figures. This highly detailed scarification is a hallmark of Bena Lulua art, and can be seen in their drums, neck rests, and other pieces. Provenance:
