Consulter la cote et le prix de African Wood Isoko Maternity Figure - Oma

Description : Africa, Nigeria, Isoko, ca. early 20th century CE. An unusual carved wood standing figural pair known as an Oma, depicting a mother holding a child in her left arm. The powerful maternal figure with robust arms and legs, and an elongated torso presents a bold visage with small eyes and nose and a relatively large protruding mouth with carved teeth, characteristic of the Isoko. The surface shows signs of libations, white kaolin, and feathers. The Isoko reside in the southeast of a region also inhabited by the Urhobo peoples and consequently, their visual art bears a resemblance to that of the Urhobo. The vast majority of their art has been created to serve an apotropaic function - typically kept upon altars, imbued with libations, blessed, and sometimes paraded through the village. Works like this example are linked to their ancestors, but rarely in a specific manner. Instead their sculptural pieces tend to idealize feminine or masculine virtues. In general, Isoko pieces are rare and quite sought after.
