Consulter la cote et le prix de 19Th C. African Igbo Wood Ikenga Male Fetish Figure

Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden ikenga fetish statue with a dramatic pair of horns atop the anthropomorphic figure. This ikenga depicts a standing man upright on thick pillar like legs holding a diamond shaped vessel or shield in front of his body. His head is simplistic, with a few notches to indicate mouth, eyes, and nose and atop the head are two flat panels that taper and curve into spiraling ram's horns. The ikenga is a ritual object that symbolizes masculine strength as well as the ability to achieve great things using one's own efforts, the horns symbolize the aggression and fighting nature of male animals. The carved figures were made to be placed on an altar and became part of their owner's identity. This example has a wonderful, aged patina and weathered surface.
