Descripción : Title: Egypt Illustrated with Pen and Pencil Author: Samuel Manning - MANNING, SAMUEL (1822Ð1881), baptist minister, was born at Leicester in 1822. His father, who was several times mayor of Leicester, acted for many years as churchwarden of St. Martin's in that town, but subsequently left the church of England, and with his family attended the ministry of Mr. Mursell, a well-known baptist preacher. After a short business career in Liverpool, Manning entered in 1840 the Baptist College at Bristol. In 1846, having completed his education at Glasgow University, he became a baptist minister at Sheppard's Barton, Frome, Somerset, where he remained until 1861. During his pastorate he contributed largely to denominational as well as to general literature, and was for some years editor of the 'Baptist Magazine.' In 1863 he became the general book editor of the Religious Tract Society, and when, in 1876, it was resolved that in future there should be two secretaries of the society, Manning was unanimously chosen one of them. He died at 35 Ladbroke Grove, London, on 13 Sept. 1881. He had frequently refused an offer of the degree of D.D., but a few years before his death he accepted the diploma of LL.D. from the university of Chicago. Editor: E. P. Thwing - Edward Payson Thwing, author and editor, was a professor of Sacred Rhetoric and Vocal Culture at lay colleges in Brooklyn New York and Boston. He was a prolific writer, emphasizing oratory of the pulpit. He was an early contributor to the discipline of elocution. Publisher: Hurst & Company, Publishers City: New York Year: 1891 Binding Style: Hardcover Pagination: 199 pages Width: 9.25 Height: 12 Book Details: This is a E. P. Thwing's revised and partly re-written edition of Samuel Manning's original. It contains numerous plates and textual illustrations. Excerpt from the text: Very naturally, this series of events did not pass without wide differences of Opinion as to the policy and the justice of the part played by England. The extremes are represented. On the one hand by those who hold that England had no right to go near Egypt at all and on the other by those who think that England ought to take Egypt and govern it in the interest of the natives, as she has done in India. But with all such divergencies of view we have nothing to do here. We allude to the series of events only because it is impossible in any work on Egypt to ignore them. The blood and treasure which England has spent during the last ten years in that ancient land have necessarily deepened the interest felt in it by all thoughtful readers. Deeds of bravery and heroism have not been lacking, whether we deem them to have been done in a righteous cause or not. And this volume, in its new and improved form, will help to make clear to those at home the land and the people on whose behalf they were done. Condition / Notes: This antique book is bound in green cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial designs to front cover. It shows well with mild age/wear indications concentrated at the extremities. The front board is debossed and lavishly decorated in black, brown and gold with decorative end papers. Gilt-edged pages are clean and without markings.
