The book was extremely influential in the 17th and 18th centuries and was quoted extensively in various art forms. This volume contains all three parts, and is profusely illustrated with engravings. The Iconologia overo Descrittione Dell’imagini Universali cavate dall’Antichita et da altri luoghi was a highly influential emblem book based on Egyptian, Greek and Roman emblematical representations. The book was used by orators, artists, poets and modern Italians to give substance to qualities such as virtues, vices, passions, arts and sciences. The concepts were arranged in alphabetical order, after the fashion of the Renaissance. For each there was a verbal description of the allegorical figure proposed by Ripa to embody the concept, giving the type and color of its clothing and its varied symbolic paraphernalias, along with the reasons why these were chosen, reasons often supported by references to literature (largely classical) [Courtesy Wikipedia]. Condition / Notes: This antique vellum volume has a separated front board and a partially-separated spine cover. The text block is solid. The pages and engravings show light age toning and occasional foxing. This volume has been collated. There are 95 unnumbered pages from the title page through the index. The pages of part one are numbered 1-602. The pages of part two are numbered 1-191. Pencil markings are seen on the page opposite the cover. Pencil and ink are present throughout. The following page numbers are printed incorrectly in part one: 30 and 31 are numbered “50” and “51,” 65 is numbered “95,” the digit “3” is missing from 113, 134 and 135 are numbered “138” and “139,” pages numbers 291 and 293 are missing, and page 323 is numbered “223.” From 349 through 356, the pages are numbered 4 numbers below, for example, 349 is “345,” 355 is “351.” As of page 357, the page numbers continue correctly through 505, which is numbered “555.” There are 4 unnumbered pages between 424 and 425. The bottom right corner has been torn from pages 203-206. The text of page 601/602 is cut off at the top. In part two of this volume, the number “3” is missing, the reverse of page 2 is numbered “4.” Page 18 is numbered “17,” 60 is numbered “63,” 160 is numbered “158,” and page 179 is numbered “197.” Pages numbers 179 and 180 are missing.
