Author: Theodor Graf - Theodor Graf (11 March 1840 in Engerda (Thuringia ) - 25 November 1903 in Rodaun) was an Austrian carpet and art dealer. Theodor Graf was a carpet merchant in Vienna with a branch in Cairo . Excited by Joseph von Karabacek, in 1881 he began searching Egypt for papyri and late antiquity (Coptic) textiles. He led excavations in Arsinoe and Herakleopolis, where he found several thousand papyri and textiles. In 1883, an exhibition of his discoveries was held in the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna. The museum bought large portions of the pieces, and the papyri were acquired by Archduke Rainer, who gave them to the court library. Graf subsequently purchased more late antique textiles from the necropolis of Akhmim and sold them to the world's museums. In 1887, he acquired more than 300 mummy portraits . Some of them he sent to sales exhibitions in Europe and the US, the rest were sold after his death by his heirs. He was the main source of mummy portraits for the world's museums.
