Descripción : This large folio lithograph is from Sir William Cornwallis Harris's Portraits of the Game and Wild Animals of Southern Africa, delineated in their native haunts, during a hunting expedition from the Cape Colony as far as the Tropic of Capricorn, in 1836 and 1837, with sketches of the field sports. The lithography was completed by Frank Howard. The work was printed in London by Green & Martin between 1840 and 1842. It is from one of the most important and valuable of the large folio works on South African fauna. (Mendelssohn) It is believed no more than 500 copies of this work were published. Captain Harris was an officer for the East India Company's Bombay Engineers. He was invalided to the Cape of Good Hope for two years, but then was allowed first passage through a new route by a Matabele Chief, Moselikatze, on his journey home. He completed sketches from this journey of the wild animals and game that were then used to publish the work presented here.
