Some are among the most beautiful of the great ancestor figures, and undoubtedly constitute archetypes of supreme importance to the history of art in southeastern Zaire. We have hypothesized that the traditions according to which these works were created might have provided the origin of the full, rounded forms of Luba figure sculpture.'
