Descripción : AN ANTIQUE MAP, Barbariæ Guineæ Maritime à Freto Gibraltar ad Fluvium Gambiæ cum insulus Flandricis et Canaricis, AMSTERDAM, CIRCA 1675, hand colored ink on paper, printed by Frederick de Wit (1630-1706), a page fragment from the original Orbis Maritimus often Zee Atlas, showing the coast of Lisbon to Andalusia to the Strait of Gibraltar, the kingdoms of Fez and Morocco continuing down the west African coast, including the Canary Islands and Gorée Island, ending with the Gambian River delta, a figural cartouche of a parasol shaded Moroccan merchant with Tunisian soldier at his back and personification of Africa welcomes the map viewer while speared figures move in the background, and a tribal king is carried by hammock smoking a pipe, at right a Sultan of Morocco rides a horse holding a severed head, lead by an armed foot soldier, and in the foreground of the cartouche a Barbary privateer grapples with a collared African slave while at his feet the horror of a slumped headless body confronts the viewer, the serpent versus crocodile tussle unfolds before the gorey scene of the 17th century Ottoman and Arab slave trade, overlaid with rhumb lines issued from fifteen wind roses, with two compass roses, hand numbered 139. 19 1/4 x 12 1/2 Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
