Descripción : African Igbo Maiden Spirit Mask Agbogho Mmwo, Nigeria. Fine large mask of a female spirit, carved with narrow open eyes, well-defined nose, slightly projecting mouth with upper filed teeth, white kaolin indicating she is of the spirit world boldly contrasts with the blackened features. Above the tall coiffure is surmounted with a spirit child figure holding the curved braids on sides, legs wrapped in relief below braids. Thick patina of encrusted deposits, and eroded areas in the lower rim indicating extensive ritual use. Note: Maiden spirit masks were worn by men, and danced at festivals honoring important deities, they represent the ideals of female beauty. On custom base.
