Inspection under UV light reveals larger areas of retouchings and overpaintings to the upper parts of the depiction, the examination of older reproductions of the painting has shown that the work is strongly affected by restorations, especially regarding the now clearly changed rendering of the trees and foliage. The edges of the panel are also slightly rubbed and the signature appears a bit abraded. The varnish is slightly dirty. The panel measures 46 x 63.5 cm and the frame 68 x 81.5 cm.

Klaes Molenaer (1628/29-b.1676)
The landscape and genre painter was born in Haarlem and became a member of the local painters’ guild in 1651. Molenaer was specialized in peasant motifs, coastal and winter landscapes as well as small genre scenes. He was probably a friend or the brother of Jan Miense Molenaer (c.1610-1669), a famous student of Frans Hals. A selection of his works is today preserved at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, at the Van der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal and at the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne. (cbo)
