Notes : COLLECTOR'S NOTE In 2017, the artist received the Deutsche Bank’s Artist of the Year Award and the 4th Malcolm McLaren Award at Performa 17 in New York. He was also the 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist and was awarded the 15th Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel.Earlier in his career, Wa Lehurele received the Tollman Award for the Visual Arts in 2012, the MTN New Contemporaries Award in 2010, and was the first winner of the Spier Contemporary Award in 2007.The artist has held numerous solo exhibitions, most notably I Cut My Skin to Liberate the Splinter at the Tate Modern, London (2019); Bird Song at MAXXI, Rome (2017) and Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Berlin (2017) and In All My Wildest Dreams at the Art Institute of Chicago (2016).The artist has participated in several biennales, namely the 58th Venice Biennale, Italy (2019); 14th Sharjah Biennale, UAE; 12th Dakar Biennale (2017); 9th SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul (2017), and the 14th Sharjah Biennale, UAE.Wa Lehulere co-founded Gugulective (2006), an artist-led collective based in Cape Town, and is a founding member of the Center for Historical Reenactments (2010) in Johannesburg.The highest price achieved for the artist’s work at auction is R228,289 for the 2017 work titled Two Knots Per Second, 5 at Aspire Art in 2018.
