With the exception of six years in the British Army during the Second World War, followed by four years in the Diplomatic Service at Cairo in Egypt, his entire life was devoted to the excavation of archaeological sites along the Nile Valley. The frontispiece photograph depicts Buhen Fortress from the air in 1957. The pages are clean and bright. This work is profusely illustrated with 48 textual figures and 108 plates, including double-page continuous sheet images.
