Description : MARITIME HISTORY - TRAVELLING -- RIFAUD, J.-J. Voyage en Égypte, en Nubie, et lieux circonvoisins, depuis 1805 jusqu'en 1828. (Paris, J.J. Rifaud) chez l'auteur, (1830-36). W. lithogr. dedicaton (to king Louis-Philippe I?) and 192 (numbered) illustr. on 182 lithogr. plates, of which 48 cold. by hand. Lge-fol. Lithogr. owrps. (21 installments) w. coat of arms of the House of Romanov on the front sides. Loose in modern marbled portfol. w. ties. (Foxing/browning in places (dedication leaf and few plates more severely), some wear and tear to margins in places (lower margin of few plates also cut w. scissors, but still ample), owrps. also a bit dam., but in all in good condition). Jean-Jacques Rifaud (1786-1852), sculptor by profession, had set his mind on travelling and embarked for his first voyage to Egypt in 1813. There he became the right-hand man of Bernardino Drovetti, Napoleon's Proconsul in Egypt. He helped Drovetti amassing a vast quantity of Egyptian antiquities, now i.a. in Turin, Paris and Berlin. The work was to contain five text volumes and 300 plates. The text never appeared and how many plates were published is not certain. The 'Bibliotheek van de Oudheid' at Brussels claims to have 223 plates present in their copy. The plates depict a wide variety of subjects: temples, hieroglyphics, tomb findings, boats (dows), jewelry, pottery, but also fishes, plants, etc. Rare collection in the vary rare original installments. 8 plates are double (not counted in the total amount of plates as mentioned above), they are nrs. 7, 23, 49, 64, 88, 89, 106, 263 and the dedication leaf to the king. - Ibrahim-Hilmy, p. 174, Graesse VI, 122, Brunet IV, 1203.
