Description : AFRICAN TRIBAL ART, CARVED WOOD CHOKWE MASK - (Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia) Known primarily for figural sculptures, Chokwe masks are made from barkcloth stretched over an armature or carved from wood. Masks were previously worn for investiture of a chief or for male initiation ceremonies, currently they are used for entertainment and worn by traveling troubadours. Ivory pigment highlights features and scarification, twisted plant material serves as attached hair. Unmarked. Condition good. 20th century. 13.75H x 8W
