This is the rating and price for 19Th C. African Songye Wood Nkisi Figure

Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Songye culture, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure adorned with a rattan fiber skirt and a bulbous headdress also of rattan fiber, all caked in desiccated earth. Facing forward, the figure displays a sizeable head with a prominent jaw line, a broad nose, slender eyes, and petite ears, as she bends both arms at the elbows to place her hands on her protruding - possibly pregnant - belly. Nkisi figures were made by a variety of cultures to fight evil spirits, heal sick family members, decide arguments, mark an important occasion or contract, or perform a variety of other tasks. These figures often show signs of use because a priest or other holy person had to activate them using magical substances, like the desiccated earth covering this figure.
